We are fortunate to have 5 full-time veterinarians on staff:
Robert Barney, DVM: Dr. Barney earned all of his degrees from Ohio State University: Bachelor of Science in 1966, Master of Science (in Microbiology) in 1968, and his DVM in 1974. He served in the U.S. Army from 1968 - 1970, including a tour in Vietnam. He established Lakewood Animal Hospital in 1980, and The Cat Clinic in 1998. He is certified in Veterinary Acupuncture, and has completed 150 hours of coursework in Chinese herbal medicine. He and his wife, Katherine, live in Wooster on the "Flying Pig Farm," raising 2 cows, 5 goats, 2 sheep, 50 chickens, 5 ducks, 4 dogs and several barn cats. They have 4 children and 3 grandchildren. Dr. Barney's hobbies include reading and collecting clocks, egg baskets and African masks.
Lori Koenig, DVM: Dr. Koenig is a 1983 graduate of Case Western Reserve University where she earned a BS in Chemistry. She continued her education at Ohio State Veterinary College and graduated in 1988. She joined the staff of Lakewood Animal Hospital in July, 1988. Along with small animal care, she also brings a vast knowledge of exotic animal care and treatment. She is a member of NOAH (Northeast Ohio Association of Herpetologists). Dr. Koenig and her husband have 3 daughters and 2 cats. Her other hobbies include scrapbooking, gardening, and the Cleveland Indians.
Michelle M. Konecny, DVM: After completing her undergraduate work at Ohio State University, Dr. Konecny graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1999. She practiced small animal medicine in Mayfield Heights and Columbus, Ohio before joining the Lakewood Animal Hospital/Cat Clinic team in 2002. She shares her house with 3 dogs, Bailey, Sidney and Rudy (aka "The Little Man") and enjoys golf, hiking, softball and traveling.
Michelle Newkirk, DVM: Dr. Newkirk completed her Bachelor of Science in Zoology at Ohio State University in 1999. She worked for several years in the Department of Veterinary Biosciences at OSU before continuing her education in veterinary medicine. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2006, and worked briefly in Columbus, Ohio before moving back to her home town of Cleveland. Dr. Newkirk joined the Lakewood Animal Hospital/Cat Clinic team in 2007. Her two cats, George and Lainey, keep her company at home. She enjoys consignment shopping, hiking, and Buckeye football.
Bo Rog, DVM: Born and raised in Lakewood Ohio, Dr. Rog attended Purdue University and Ohio State University for his undergraduate work, and graduated from the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1977. He served as a captain in the United States Air Force in Texas until 1980, when he then worked in an emergency clinic for two years. He spent the next 4 years working in a mixed practice in San Antonio, before returning home to join the staff of the Lakewood Animal Hospital in 1986. Dr. Rog has been married to Kathy, a Lakewood school teacher, since 1974, and they have 2 grown children, daughter Carrie and son Brady. They share their home with a cat, a dog, and a variety of fish.
